• Calibration: machine-calibrated (±1mm) stone lays faster and needs less mortar to level, saving real labour money. Uncalibrated cleft stone looks more rustic but costs more to lay.
• Origin: stone quarried close to a port with established container routes ships cheaper. Ask suppliers for the freight quote as part of the stone quote — never separately.

1. Measure honestly — include the house-wall threshold, steps, and a buffer for cuts (add 5–8% for sawn, 10–15% for crazy paving).
