How to Lay Bluestone Pavers: A Complete Patio Installation Guide

Bluestone — the dense natural slate family we quarry in Jiujiang — is the workhorse of outdoor paving in Australia, the US and Europe. It is slip-resistant when wet, freeze-thaw stable, and looks better with every year of weather. But bluestone’s reputation is only as good as its base. Lay it on a proper compacted sub-base and a bluestone patio outlives the house; lay it on sand over dirt and you will be re-laying it in two seasons.

Before You Start: Materials and Tools

  • Bluestone pavers — 30mm or 40mm thickness for driveways, 20–30mm for patios. Order 5–8% extra for cuts and breakage.
  • Crushed rock base (road base / 20mm minus) — the single most important material on site.
  • Bedding sand — clean, washed, screedable sand (never beach sand with salt).
  • Edge restraints — concrete haunching, steel edging, or timber sleepers to lock the outer row.
  • Tools: plate compactor, screed rails, rubber mallet, string lines, angle grinder with diamond blade, spirit level, 4mm spacers.

Step 1: Excavate to the Right Depth

Dig out to allow for: 100–150mm of compacted crushed rock (150mm for driveways), 30–40mm of bedding sand, and your paver thickness. Total excavation is typically 180–220mm for a patio, 250mm+ for vehicle traffic. Keep the base slightly crowned or sloping so surface water runs off.

Step 2: Compact the Sub-Base

Spread the crushed rock in two layers, compacting each with a plate compactor. This is not optional — a soft sub-base is the #1 cause of sinking and lipping bluestone. Wet the rock slightly before compacting for a tighter bed. Check levels with a straight edge as you go.

Step 3: Screed the Bedding Sand

Set screed rails (or screed pipes) to your finished level minus paver thickness. Spread washed sand, tamp it, and screed it smooth. Do not walk on the screeded bed once it is finished — one footprint ruins the level.

Step 4: Lay in Your Pattern

Bluestone pavers come in two profiles:

  • Sawn squares and rectangles — uniform grid patterns (running bond, herringbone, basket weave). Lay with 4–6mm joints.
  • Tumbled / cleft-edge irregular pieces — random crazy-paving layouts with wider, more organic joints.

Lay each paver directly onto the sand bed — never tap it down with a mallet while it sits on sand and then try to lift it again, as this disturbs the bed. Work from a fixed corner along string lines, checking level and falls every few pavers.

Step 5: Cut, Fill and Compact

Mark and cut edge pavers with an angle grinder and diamond blade (cut from the back face to avoid chipping the visible edge). Sweep dry jointing sand into all joints, then compact the whole area with the plate compactor — joints lock and the pavers settle together. Sweep more sand in, compact again, and repeat until joints are full.

Step 6: Edge Restraints and Drainage

Haunch the outer edge with concrete or install steel/timber edging — without edge restraint, the outer pavers will creep sideways within a year. Ensure a minimum 1.5–2% fall away from the house toward drainage points. Never let standing water sit on the paving; bluestone drains well, but joints need to shed water, not hold it.

Should You Seal Bluestone?

Sealing is optional and largely a personal choice. Bluestone is naturally low-porosity, so sealing is not required for protection — some homeowners seal to darken the colour and ease stain cleaning, others prefer the natural weathered look. If you seal, use a breathable, water-based paving sealer and reseal every 2–3 years. If you do not seal, simply rinse and brush occasionally.

Bluestone Installation FAQ

Can bluestone pavers be laid on sand without concrete?

Yes — the dry-lay method (compacted crushed rock + screeded sand + joint sand) is standard for patios and is perfectly stable when the sub-base is done properly. Concrete bedding is only needed for heavy vehicle loads or on soft soils.

What thickness bluestone do I need?

20–30mm for pedestrian patios and paths; 30–40mm for driveways and vehicle areas.

Is bluestone slippery when wet?

Natural cleft or tumbled finishes have excellent wet slip resistance. Highly polished finishes are not recommended for outdoor use — choose cleft, tumbled, or flamed finishes for exterior areas.

Does bluestone crack in winter?

Quality bluestone has very low water absorption (typically under 0.4%), so it is freeze-thaw stable. Poor-quality, high-absorption stone is the one that spalls — another reason to verify the stone’s absorption rate before you buy.
