How to Clean and Seal Bluestone: A Practical Care Guide
Bluestone is one of the lowest-maintenance paving materials you can install — but “low maintenance” is not “no maintenance.” A few minutes a year keeps the colour rich, the joints tight and the surface safe. Here is the honest care routine, including when sealing is actually worth it.
Daily and Weekly Care
- Sweep regularly — grit and sand are the real enemy. They get walked into the surface and slowly abrade even dense stone.
- Rinse with a hose for patios and paths; a gentle stream moves dust into the joints where it belongs.
- Blow leaves promptly in autumn — decomposing leaves leave tannin stains on light grey stone.
How to Deep-Clean Bluestone (Annual Routine)
- Dry-brush first: sweep the area and brush out any moss or growth from joints before wet cleaning.
- Use pH-neutral cleaner diluted per label. Alkaline or acid-based patio cleaners can etch the surface and bleach the natural colour.
- Scrub with a soft-bristle brush (a long-handled deck brush works well), working the cleaner into the texture.
- Rinse thoroughly with low pressure — a normal hose nozzle is fine. Avoid a pressure washer on the surface: high pressure drives water under the pavers and can wash out joint sand.
- Let it dry fully before you reseal or re-sand joints.
Stubborn Stains: What Works and What Doesn’t
- Oil and grease: absorb with kitty litter or cornstarch overnight, then clean with a degreaser made for natural stone.
- Moss and algae: brush away, then treat with a gentle biocide. Copper strips along damp edges help prevent regrowth.
- Rust marks: from steel furniture or fixings — use a rust remover labelled safe for stone; test on an offcut first.
- Never use muriatic acid on bluestone. It strips the surface and leaves permanent white bloom.
Should You Seal Bluestone?
The honest answer: sealing is optional. Bluestone’s water absorption is very low (typically under 0.4%), so it does not need a sealer for protection against frost or water. Homeowners seal for three reasons:
- Colour enhancement — a “wet look” sealer deepens the grey/blue tones dramatically.
- Stain resistance — helpful around barbecue areas or where kids and pets eat.
- Easier cleaning — sealed stone wipes cleaner faster.
If you decide to seal, use a breathable, water-based paving sealer (never a film-forming acrylic that traps moisture). Plan to reseal every 2–3 years, and always test the sealer on an offcut or a corner paver first.
Joint Care: The Part Everyone Forgets
Joint sand is what actually holds dry-laid bluestone stable. Over a few winters, joints can wash out. Top them up with clean jointing sand every couple of years and re-compact — this single habit prevents most “wobbly paver” problems.

Can I pressure wash bluestone?
Not on the surface. A pressure washer will erode joint sand and can chip the edges of cleft stone. Use a hose and brush; if you must use a washer, keep it on the lowest setting and hold it at an angle to the joints.
Does bluestone need to be sealed before winter?
No. Quality bluestone is freeze-thaw stable without sealing. If your stone has visibly high absorption (water darkens it and stays), that is a sign of low-grade material — and sealing won’t fix a structural problem.
Why is my bluestone turning white or cloudy?
Usually efflorescence (natural mineral salts) in the first year — it washes away over time. Or it is residue from an alkaline cleaner. Both resolve with gentle rinsing; never acid-clean.
How often should I top up joint sand?
Check yearly, top up every 2–3 years, or after any heavy rain event that visibly washed joints out.
