Water Features and Slate: Building Serene Garden Pools and Streams

Lay irregular slate slabs on the pool floor and the water becomes a mirror. Dark blue-grey slate gives the deepest reflections and hides algae growth.

Stream beds and rills

Rounded and cleft slate pieces create natural-looking stream beds. Choose flat slabs for stepping crossings, and pack smaller pieces along the edges to blur the boundary between water and planting.

Zen gardens

Raked gravel, moss and a few well-placed slate islands create a contemplative space that needs almost no water at all. The contrast of dark stone against light gravel is timeless.

Why slate for wet areas

With water absorption below 0.4% and 150+ freeze-thaw cycles, slate will not spall or crack in wet environments. The natural cleft surface also stays slip-resistant when submerged or damp.
